Judge of the Year
Grant County Circuit Court Judge Robert P. VanDeHey is the 2016 Bench and Bar Judge of the Year Award Recipient. Judge VanDeHey serves as judge for the Grant County Circuit Court, Branch 1, in Wisconsin. He was appointed to the court in 1998 by Governor Tommy Thompson and elected in 1999. Van De Hey was re-elected in 2005 and most recently 2011. His current term expires in 2017. Van De Hey earned his B.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1982, and his J.D. from the same school in 1985.
In nominating Judge VanDeHey for the award, Grant County Circuit Court Judge Craig Day pointed out Judge VanDeHey’s defense of the trial bench and consequently the integrity of the entire judicial system against a published attach using inaccurate information about the courts. Judge VanDeHey presented a reasoned, dispassionate explanation of the inaccuracy of the reports during a follow-up conversation with the reporter. As a result, the information was removed from the media website and a correction was issued.
Judge Craig noted, “This approach – sound intuition followed by necessary effort and concluding with calm, reasoned action – illustrates the manner in which Judge VanDeHey fairly and impartially dispenses justice, big and small, on a daily basis.
